It is crucial to follow the instructions in the exact order and also to follow the steps right after they get displayed.

Log out any other users on the computer
Restart your computer
Make sure you’re the only one logged-in user.
open DigitaizeConnect.exe
In the app go into Utility -> Firmware Update Tool
Carefully follow the instructions.
If that didn’t help, try following:

Right click on the DigitaizeConnect.exe
click on “Run as Administrator”
In the app go into Utility -> Firmware Update Tool
Carefully follow the instructions.
If the upload succeeded but you still get an firmware update alert on each app start, just ignore it – this bug will be solved in the next app version.
